Before your next haircut
Short answers to the questions that come up most often. Each links to a fuller guide.
Do I need an appointment for a walk-in salon?
No — walk-in salons are built around taking customers as they arrive. Many chains also offer an online check-in that adds your name to the list remotely so you spend less time waiting in the salon. It reserves a place in line rather than a fixed appointment slot, so arrival times still matter.
How much does a haircut cost?
Prices are set locally and vary a lot between markets, so there's no single national figure. The most reliable approach is to check the price list for the specific salon you plan to visit, then see whether a current coupon applies to that service.
What's the best way to describe the cut I want?
Bring a photo, and pair it with two or three specifics: how much length comes off, how short the sides go, and where you want the weight to sit. Naming a guard number or a length in inches removes most of the guesswork. Our haircut guides break down the common cuts in those terms.
How often should I get a haircut?
It depends far more on the cut than on hair growth. Short, tapered styles lose their shape in roughly four to six weeks; longer layered cuts can hold for two to three months. If you're growing hair out, a light trim on a longer cycle keeps ends healthy without losing progress.
My child hates haircuts. Any advice?
Timing and preparation do most of the work — a well-rested child, a quieter time of day, and a quick explanation of what will happen beforehand. Our kids' haircut guides cover first haircuts, choosing a kid-friendly salon, and what to do mid-meltdown.
